Most people would agree that roulette is a random game. The ball spins around the rim and randomly drops into one of the numbered slots on the wheel, right? Wait just a minute. Although I would agree with that statement, I wouldn’t be so fast to say the game is completely random. The fact is, there are non-random patterns we can detect within a random game. So then, just how random is roulette? Let’s take a closer look.
One of the non-random patterns exhibited by roulette is called the law of the third. Let’s use a double zero roulette wheel for example so we can see how this applies. A double zero roulette wheel has 38 pockets on it. There is 1 through 36 and of course the 0 and 00. So, all things equal, if we spin the ball 38 times, each number should hit 1 time. But we know that isn’t going to happen. So then, what exactly would happen in those 38 spins? There would only be between 24 and 27 number that would hit, leaving the other 11 to 14 numbers, or 1/3, without a hit. That’s the law of the third in action. This will happen on any roulette wheel anywhere in the world.
Another example of the law of the third in action would be on the 11:1 street bets. The roulette layout has 12 streets. Thus, if we spun the ball 12 times, we would expect that approximately 1/3 of the streets will not hit. Sure enough, in 12 spins you will see that around 9 of the streets will hit.
Try this for yourself the next time you go to the casino. You will quickly see that the law of the third holds true. I’ve seen a lot of the methods people use at the roulette table chasing the numbers around the wheel trying to exploit the law of the third, but the fact is, you must approach such patterns with a solid plan of attack in order to beat the wheel.
